Restrictions on Ghibli-Style Image Generation Due to High Demand on OpenAI
On Wednesday, OpenAI launched a new update for ChatGPT, allowing users to generate images inspired by the iconic Studio Ghibli style. However, despite its massive success, this feature has put enormous strain on the company's technical infrastructure. Users rushed to try out the new capability, leading to an unprecedented surge in demand on OpenAI's servers. This prompted CEO Sam Altman to comment on X: "Can you please slow down on generating images? Our team needs sleep!"
Shortly after, OpenAI announced temporary restrictions on the use of this feature. Altman explained, "It's great to see people enjoying images in ChatGPT, but our GPUs are literally melting." This surge in demand not only impacts system performance but also raises concerns about the high environmental cost associated with running such advanced models.
This development in ChatGPT is powered by the GPT-4o update, a more sophisticated model with enhanced comprehension and interaction capabilities compared to previous versions. GPT-4o excels at analyzing requests and continuously improving images based on user interactions, resulting in more precise and refined outputs.
Although OpenAI had initially announced that the update would be available to all users, the company was forced to delay its rollout for non-paying users. Altman confirmed, "The demand for this feature has exceeded all our expectations, even though we had high estimates," justifying the delay in general availability.
This situation has also intensified discussions about intellectual property rights in the AI world. OpenAI did not obtain an official license from Studio Ghibli, raising questions about the legality of using well-known artistic styles without explicit permission. As these challenges grow, OpenAI and other companies may need to review their policies to strike a balance between innovation and respect for creative rights.
